Origin of Will
CHAPTER 1: Origin of the Journey
I lay here battered and bruised from yet another day of vicious bullying. I pick myself up off the ground. Not sure why these clowns chose me to bully, but I resolved myself to not kill anyone simply because they piss me off.
My name is Will Whitner. I’m a sixteen year old 6’0” tall, brown skinned, brown haired, polygamist, orphan, that has just had to leave the orphanage because I’m too old for adoption now. I’ve trained myself over the years in the orphanage to become stronger. Only one of my friends from the orphanage, Vincent, knows of my fighting skills. I hid it from others and he found me practicing. Over the years, I’ve been helping out around the orphanage and building a small savings. I’m up to about 4,000 gold and I’m sure I can use that to travel quite a bit.
It helps to know this was going to be my last day having to deal with this. I've a quest, a plan, some supplies, money, and the skills to get myself out of crappy situations. Soon I'm going on a trip around the world. Hoping to help the world's growing interwar problems with each kingdom fighting and making treaties that are only made so one kingdom doesn't attack another. This world is a mess, and I plan to take over the world and fix their problems. A common enemy can make temporary friends. If possible, I hope to make people work together against myself rather than against each other.
I sit up and brush myself off as I always do as the end-of-lunch bell rings. I stand and go back to the classroom and sit in my designated seat, middle of the room. On my right, at 5’7”, with long red hair, beautifully pouty lips, and the most charming slightly buck teeth, the prettiest girl in school, Gail Inman. On my left, at a mere 5’11”, with vast stupidity and spiky black hair with red highlights, was my fiercest bully, Mark Anthony (professional asshole). In front of me, the 6’2”, chill dude, Luke Wilson; just a guy I talk to from time to time. Lastly, behind me, at around 5’9”, slim, kinda fit for a nerdy girl, with shoulder length green hair, and purple-pinkish eyes, the school's prodigy girl, Delilah Kohl.
"Had a nice nap, eh, Whitner," the professional asshole spouted from his painfully stupid mouth.
"Are you okay, Will," Gail asked, worried.
"Why you worried about him for," professional asshole extraordinaire continues to set new examples of idiocy.
"Why don't you tell the teachers or the principal, Will?"
"It's not important, I'm not going to be here much longer," I responded dryly.
"What's wrong Whitman, skipping town," professional asshole extraordinaire M.D. continues to baffle with the extent of stupidity involved in his craft.
"I'm going on an adventure. I'm going to explore."
"That sounds so romantic," Delilah chimed in.
"You wanna come with," I asked jokingly.
"Can I really?"
"I- you- Sure?"
"Great."
"How's your family going to feel about you leaving?"
"How is yours?"
"I'm an orphan."
"Really? I'm sorry, I had no idea."
"Well, you never bothered to ask."
"In any case, my family is hell bent on making me a doctor, but I'm not interested in any of that."
"Tragic. I'm sure a lot of people would cry if they heard you say that."
"When do we leave?"
"At the end of the school day."
"Cool."
When school was over, I waited for Delilah at the front door of the school until she came. Delilah came with a delightfully cheerful demeanor.
"Hey Will. Ready to go?"
"Yeah. You seem happy, any reason?"
"I'm just glad to be getting away."
"Mmhmm. Well, if you're coming with me, you're going to have to know something."
"What's that?"
"I'm trying to take over the world."
Delilah's face couldn't contain the amount of laughter trying to spew from her body and it burst out from her as she rolled over and grabbed her ribs. She took a minute or so to die of laughter. When she regained her composure, she took a deep breath and calmly spoke.
"Okay, what are you really doing?"
"I'm going to take over the world. All the kingdoms."
"Are- really?"
"Yeah. I'm gonna take over the world and attempt to fix as many problems as I can."
"You really think you can take over the world?"
"Yeah."
"Why? You can't even stop a bully."
"There's more to me than you know."
"Well, I'm going to go home and prepare some equipment. If you really are determined to take over the world, I'll help."
Delilah headed home, I already had my duffle bag with me and sat waiting for her to return. Little did I know, Captain professional asshole extraordinaire M.D. would make another appearance today.
"What's wrong, Witless," Mark asked, sarcastically,"lost the nerve to fight me?"
"Piss off, Mark. I'm done taking your bullshit."
"Oh? Somebody's acting big and bad. Trying to show off to your girlfriend for your big field trip?"
"Look, my school life is over, I'm making a new life around the world moving and fighting as I see fit."
"Okay big guy, why don't you make a new start by fighting me."
"Fine. You get first swing. But know, I will not be LETTING you hit me."
Mark took a wild swing, and connected with four feet of air. I ducked under the swing and connected to his chin with a swift uppercut and fired three straight punches to the stomach. He grabbed me by the shoulders and attempted to headbutt me in the forehead. I took hold of his collar, pressed my right foot to his chest, and fell backward, throwing him headfirst into a nearby wall. He lay on the ground unconscious, unmoving.
"You know... You're a lot easier to talk to when you're unconscious."
First captain professional asshole extraordinaire M.D. was finally shut up for once.
Delilah came back to meet me at the school, dressed in a knee length white skirt and pink blouse, she also had a large bag on her back and a sleeping bag strapped to it. She noticed Mark unconscious on the ground.
"What happened to him?"
"I gave him a farewell beating."
"He looks hurt."
"Yep. Badly. Ready to go?"
"Uh... Yeah. I guess."
We head to the nearest store to buy a map. I make sure we can head to an edge of the country. I make sure we set a destination and have enough money to make it there. We went to a restaurant and ate to fuel up for travel.
CHAPTER 2: Travel Trouble
We head to the edge of town and when we reach it, we see the gates closed and a group of knights blocking the way. The Knight closest to use looks at us approaching lets out a heavy sigh then calls out to us.
"Hold on, you two. We've got a message about some girl who's gone missing. A Delilah? You guys seen her?"
"I'm not mis-,"Delilah was about to admit until I cut her off.
"Do you have a description of her?"
"Nah, the mother just randomly called, screaming about a missing daughter and to send the entire kingdom on the search and only bothered to give us a name with no return address or description of the person we're looking for. Just a first name at that."
"Well, that's unfortunate, but we haven’t seen her. Come on Danielle."
"Okay,"Delilah played along.
The knight just let us through and as we left I heard him mention to the other knight how stupid the situation was. When we'd made it a mile or so away from the gates we saw a person who’d set up a makeshift blockade out of crude wooden barriers and a sign that said “Delilah Chekpoint” on it.
"Uh-oh," Delilah said to herself in response to seeing this monstrosity.
"Delilah? Delilah," The man yelled out running toward her.
He was around average height, long green hair, with a wide build and he was clearly athletic as he made his way the hundred yards toward us with a brisk jog, barely breaking stride. As he neared our position, his eyes widened as he saw me and realized she was with me, leaving.
"Hey. What are you doing," He asked in an annoyed tone.
"We're just-,"I start.
"Shut up, you. I'll deal with you later. What are you doing with him?"
"I'm running away. Traveling around the world with my friend here,"Delilah explained.
"I'm not letting you leave. You've got a good life, a great education, and the prince has agreed to a courtship with you."
"Well, why don't YOU go marry the prince. I want nothing to do with that incorrigible bastard."
"You shouldn’t speak of our prince that way. If you make him happy, we can live the life we've always wanted."
"I don’t care. You’re not ransoming me off for the benefit of our stuck up mother, lazy father, and your spoiled ass. Come on, Will. Lead the way."
"You take one more step and I'll break your head open, you sumbitch."
I just smiled at him. It was a simple smile but quite effective. He backed down a bit when he looked at me but still tried to be imposing.
"Excuse us, sir. We're going on an adventure. Now get out of our way," I spoke slowly and menacingly.
"You're not taking my sister anywhere. We need her to help our family become successful."
"Delilah?"
"Yeah,"She asked surprised that I chimed her in randomly.
"On a scale of zero to four, how many limbs, do you like on your brother?"
Delilah paused in thought and after a couple seconds she sighed and answered,"Four."
"Broken, mostly-functional, or fully-functional?"
"Mostly functional."
"Why are you two talking about me like I'm not-"
I swiftly punch her brother square in the nose, effectively shutting him up and causing him to curl up on the ground holding his nose and writhing in pain.
"You shut up. We're having a conversation. Rude."
"That should be enough, Will. Let us go, Lucas."
"No! I told mom I'd bring you back. I don’t wanna be a disappointment," He cried.
"I'm not going back. Stop trying. Just let mom know I'm leaving."
"But mom said we need you to marry the prince so he can fall in love with you and you two can live happily ever after."
Delilah sighed and patted her brother on the shoulder.
"That's not how life works. I’m not gonna be happy with some asshole that I was given away to for money. I’m happy if I choose my own path, big brother."
"I guess you're right. I'll try to talk to her then. Have fun little sis."
He looked at me with serious eyes and said,"treat my sister like the princess she is."
I looked at him, chuckled, then reassured him I would. We then walked toward the next town which was our first destination. Lournete. The major town in our kingdom of Joradel. The home of King Fredrick.
"How long till we make it there?"
"2 days."
"Where we going to sleep between now and then?"
"We're going to camp."
"Oh... Uh, I don't have much camping stuff. Pretty much just a sleeping bag."
"It's not a problem. My tent is large enough for 4 people."
"Oh. That's great! How'd you ever get a tent that large?"
"Camping store has them for big groups that would rather only have to set up one tent."
We head down the fastest path toward the town. The trip would take at least 38 hours. I made sure to bring some food items that could be eaten at room temperature or cooked on campfire.
We walk and I keep track of our path with a compass and pen on the map. The sun was setting so I decided to move us into the forest a bit and pitch the tent in the cover of trees. Once the tent was pitched, I grabbed a sleeping bag and checked on Delilah with the campfire.
"So how's the-," I start before looking at a scorched pile of leaves and twigs.
"I thought my lighter would be good for starting the fire but it burned too quickly."
"You didn't have some wood on standby?"
"Yeah, it burned up."
"No, not twigs. Big wood, large branches."
"Oh,"Delilah sighed and said, "I've never started a real fire before."
"Fine, I'll take care of it. You got your sleeping bag?"
"Yeah, It’s still on my pack."
"Okay, it's in the tent."
I set up the campfire and Delilah came with some food for us to eat. A pot with some soup and two bowls. As the pot boiled we sat and chatted.
"So, how'd you get the bright idea to take over the world?"
"I did some deep thinking and had some ideas about the world and how to fix some of the chaos and disparity that's going on. Hostile takeover was the best conclusion I came to."
"Which was the worst?"
"Asking politely."
"Oh."
We soon began eating and I asked Delilah a bit about herself.
“So other than the terrible family situation, what made you want to come with me?”
“I just… You’re pretty much the smartest guy in our school. I just thought if you’re going out, exploring the world, nothing holding you back, I should follow you. I’ve always wanted to explore. I’ve never even left our city before.”
“Really? I would’ve thought you’d leave town at some point. There isn’t much to do in our town, you’d get bored quickly.”
“Yeah, I did.”
“So, what else motivated you to come with.”
“I also thought you’d be cool with me tagging along when you jokingly asked ‘cuz you’re always so nice to people in our school. You help everybody, teachers, upperclassmen, classmates, underclassmen, I even saw you help that asshole that bullied you, once.”
“Yeah, he was having trouble with the teachers but it wasn’t his fault. I saw the person who actually did it so I told them.”
“I don’t think he actually talked to or bullied you for the rest of that day as thanks for you helping him.”
“Yeah, kinda. He just kinda ignored me for the rest of the day since we never actually talk.”
Delilah yawns and rubs her eyes, I take her hand and guide her to the tent and open it while leading her in. She grabs the nearby sleeping bag (mine), curls in and almost instantly falls asleep. I step back outside and sit near the fire guarding the campsite. I sat out for a few hours and made sure to put the fire out completely and got in the tent. Delilah's sleeping bag was a tight fit so I decided not to use it. Luckily, I'd brought 2 sleeping bags and I simply set up the other one and slept in it.
