Renegades V.S. Enforcers
Chapter 1: Shipped Away
Hello all. My name is Eric Brynd. I've just finished preliminary Enforcer training and now I'm on a bus being shipped out into Encampment C to join in the war against the Renegades. The Enforcers are the good guys in this strange power struggle of a war. The Renegades want chaos to reign supreme and create a lawless city of crime and disorder. But why would anyone ever want that? Oh well, I guess the world just works on having at least one evil force, no matter how nonsensical. This bus ride has been fairly boring for the past 20 minutes when the passenger in the seat next to me finishes listening to her music and decides to talk to me.
"Hey Eric. You actually passed the test, huh?"
"Yup. Told you I would. Why'd you ever doubt me?"
"Because you seemed like a brainy type and the fitness test isn't for brains, it's for brawn."
By the way, the intellectual on the other end of this conversation is Ms.Zita Short. She's a tough little redheaded chick that's hard to handle. A great soldier, difficult to hit, and will follow directions well. She has a special set of skills and from what I've seen from her prelim exams, those skills don't work under pressure, along with half her sanity.
"Yeah, well I have brawn as well as brains."
"Sure you do, noodle arms."
I flexed my sizable muscles that I worked hard for.
"Hey, these are some guns I got over here."
"Yeah, yeah. Calm 'em down Rambo."
"I'll make sure to keep the safety on."
Zita laughed at me and smiled then asked,"You think we'll be put in the same squad?"
"I'm not sure. Hopefully we are, I'd definitely be able to use your skills."
"Please, I know you're smart, but I doubt you can lead your way out of a hallway."
"I'm sure you'll be amazed after I ace the command test."
"Yes, I will be pleasantly surprised. It means you'll live and your squad should live, too."
"So, are you going to destroy the combat course?"
Her eyes sparked with delight and a huge grin spread across her face. (She likes compliments)
"You know it. I'm the best, most combat-ready soldier hands down."
"Of course you are. Unless something unexpected gets thrown into the mix."
"How is it being so unlikable?"
"The truth is pretty hard to swallow, huh, Ms. most-combat-ready?"
"I need to make sure I'm ready for any unexpected variables."
"And how are you gonna do that?"
"Maybe with the help of someone really smart?"
"I don't think Einstein's alive enough to teach you anything."
"I meant you, you moron."
I smiled slyly and elbowed her in the arm."So you admit you need me?"
"Never."
"Well, that's just selfish. Come on, show your buddy some love."
"Fine, you're needed and I would love it if you assisted me," Zita said before poking her tongue out at me.
"Aww, how sweet of you."
"Die in a fire."
"You're such a romantic."
We pulled up to the Encampment C to a round of applause. If a round of applause was synonymous with a dead silence and a single commander standing at the front door whom we had to exit and line up in front of. As we did that, the commander scanned the group for any faces too weak, happy, uncaring, scared, weird, sketchy, or any other quality easily recognizable that you wouldn't want in a soldier.
"Greetings all. I’m Commander Linda Fitzpatrick and I’m here to welcome you all to Enforcer Camp C also known as Encampment C. We will give you one night of relaxation before your placement tests. So relax, think about what you need to think about, and sleep. Because when it's time to be a soldier, one slip up and you're placed in Squad Z cleaning the barracks, cleaning the latrines and baking cookies."
'Sounds like the perfect army for the war against germs and hunger.' I thought to myself, daring not to smile about it or say it out loud.
The commander's gaze rested on me
'Don't do it, don't do it, don't do it.'
"You."
'Fuck! I'm gonna insult a superior again.'
"Yes," I manage to ask in the most polite voice I could muster up (which sounded just short of kissing her boots).
"Why did you chose to be an Enforcer?"
'Because the hours are good and the uniform is purty. Why did anyone join this army dumbass?... Wow, I really need to work on my people skills,'I think to myself, amazed that what I was actually saying wasn’t any of this.
"I became an Enforcer to protect the people of our country with all my fellow soldiers."
"Good answer."
'Thank fuck.'
After that beautiful display of self-control by yours truly, we were sent to temporary barracks in which everyone from the bus was placed together in groups of two. I walked over to the bunk bed and my temporary bunk mate greeted me.
"Hi, my name is Kate. What's yours?"
"Eric. Nice to meet you."
Kate shook my hand and asked,"So, how nervous were you when the commander called on you? I don't think I would've survived."
"I was shaking in my boots. She truly instilled fear into one heart today," I said in a heavily sarcastic tone.
Kate giggles and responds,"You're pretty funny."
"Gee, thanks."
"Hopefully, we end up in the same squad."
"If you're lucky you'll end up far away from this weirdo," Zita said, walking over to our conversation.
"Oh, hey Kate, this is Zit-a, Zit-a, this be Kate."
"Asshole. My name is Zita, not Zit-a."
"Nice to meet you, Zita."
"Likewise."
"So, how do you and Eric know each other?"
"He pretty much latched onto me our first day of prelims and for the rest of the six months we were inseparable. He's like a parasite."
"I'm sure he's better than any parasite."
"Only a little."
I lay in the bottom bunk of the bed and started to relax.
"Uh, Eric?"
"Yeah?"
"I was hoping I could have the bottom bunk."
"Sure, just give me a few minutes."
"I'm sure we can share it."
"Now, now, I wouldn't want Zita to get jealous."
"Oh, as if," Zita exclaimed a little too emphatically.
"I'm sure you just need to let her know nothing will happen."
"No promises," I joked with a smile.
Kate laughed, while Zita rolled her eyes and walked back over toward her bunk.
"Oh come on, Zita, I'll keep you company so you don't have to be scared of the dark."
"Piss off, Eric."
"Good night to you, too."
Kate looked at me puzzled and asked,"You like her, don't you?"
"Don't worry, I think you're cute."
Kate's face became bright red and she punched my shoulder.
"That's not what I was asking!"
"Yeah, yeah. Here's your bunk. I'm going to sleep."
"Good night, Eric."
"Good night, Kate."
